We seek to understand the state of the market, understand what companies have done that has or has not worked, documenting questions that MESA and the community can help answer. Overall, the goal is to accelerate each participant’s learning and progress toward Smart Manufacturing. 

Topic: Sonoco’s Journey to AI in Smart Manufacturing

Applying AI in Smart Manufacturing requires careful planning and selection of candidate opportunities (plants and specific challenges), data collection and assembly of a team of skilled technicians and domain experts who understand the problem area, patience and persistence.  In this discussion, Sonoco will discuss some of the use cases they have identified as good opportunities, what has worked, what has not worked, and key themes that have emerged, such as:

• Inadequate data collection
• Skills challenges due to turnover and retirements
• The need for improved data visualization on the shop floor
• The desire to have manufacturing simulations (and/or digital twins)

In the discussion, Sonoco will cover the process through which they attacked this problem, what they have learned to date and what they see as important for moving forward (e.g. connected factory applications).
